Cherished Memories of Auntie Liz

2173 Ocean Forest Drive White Rock, B.C. Canada V4A 6P1 March 11, 2013 Dear Kathryn, Leslie and Geoff, Your mother was a very special, talented, warm-hearted, and loving lady. And strong. I always admired the way she lived her life with great warmth, joy, laughter and a great sense of fun. I first met Auntie Liz when Auntie Bev Conkey gave a huge, gourmet dinner party for the family in their West Vancouver home. (I later learned that Bev had spent days preparing that sumptuous meal). I remember Liz, saying of me, “Oh isn’t she pretty in her long summer cotton eyelet-lace dress.” Liz had the gift of seeing the best in people and welcoming them unconditionally. Some years ago, when the family was gathering, Liz said that Great Gran McConkey had said at Andy’s and my wedding: “Now if only Pat could find a bride like Marie!” That touched me greatly. (And in the end, Pat did find Christie who is perfect for him.) I remember Phyl McConkey saying how much she loved Liz and how pleased and happy she was whenever Liz dropped by – for there would always be laughter and fun. Phyl said that when she came from England as a young bride, Liz was the person who welcomed her most warmly, which meant a great deal to Phyl throughout her life. When Liz came to visit Phyl when she had aphasia, Phyl was able to say to Liz that she loved her, and she said that to very few people openly. I will always remember Liz’s sense of adventure and fun. And her lovely, welcoming smile. Auntie Liz had the gift of making people feel good about themselves. We are blessed to have had her in our lives. In the fullness of time, may you again be able to treasure the memories of your mother and of what a truly beautiful person she was. With love and affection, Marie McConkey and Claire and Cam McClean
