One of my impressions of mom in her Hornby years was her love of animals. She had several pets, especially her beloved cat, Max. She also befriended Baby, a ferrel cat that she would feed. Baby was so shy I never saw her for years, but she would always show up for mom, when no one else was around. Mom was known to feed the animals well and inevitably visitors would would bring their dogs with them would have to keep a constant eye on mom, would would regularly slip them unauthorized snacks. The eagles would get the chick scraps. Otters would live under her house and eventually the impulse reached its full expression as she fed the mice and (yes!) the ants. We were all touched when about a half hour after she passed, she was visited by a pod of Orcas in the water just in front of her house. This is a pretty rare sight her and there visit at this special moment was truly miraculous.
